The Sociology of After-Dinner Conversation: Why Conversation After Meals is an Urban Necessity
In many Anglo-Saxon or Northern European cultures, the act of eating is often perceived as a functional necessity; the plate is finished, the bill is settled, and the table is immediately abandoned. In contrast, in Mediterranean and Atlantic cultures, the meal is merely the prelude to a much more relevant social ritual: the after-dinner conversation. This unaccounted time that passes between the last bite and the farewell is a fundamental pillar for mental health and community cohesion.
